Black tea may be the most popular tea in the US. This hearty tea is the most intensively processed type of tea; the leaves are allowed to fully oxidize, creating their black color before they are dried, giving black tea great complexity.
Black tea is rich in flavor and anti-oxidants and also creates a ‘dry mouth’ called astringency, which is caused by tannins in the tea. Milk and sweeteners mellow the astringency in a nice way. Black tea does contain caffeine and is available as loose tea, in tea pyramids or tea bags.
